Dirty Neighborhoods and Crime
In previous studies on neighborhood appearance and crime, studies revealed the prevention of moderate misdemeanor crimes (like littering and graffiti) was effective in decreasing crime, but not because the neighborhood appearance changed. It was the police presence that affected the levels criminal activity.
However, according to current research studies, there appears to be a link between neighborhood appearance and the perception of safety and trust. The study concluded that disorder can create distrust between neighbors, which in turn affects cooperation between neighbors.
